Ireland: Outcry as carers lose funding

Community childcare providers in the Irish Republic have warned that a new funding scheme will leave their services unsustainable.

Under the Community Childcare Subvention Scheme, being introduced inJanuary, grants to not-for-profit providers will be issued on the basisof the benefit status of parents whose children attend theirsettings.

Providers fear they will have to raise costs to make up for the loss oftheir current funding by long-term staffing grants. They sayunsubsidised parents will be priced out of their services.

Under the scheme, providers will have to carry out personal financialassessments of parents. Those in receipt of social welfare or ineducation or training, or on Family Income Supplement, will qualify forsubsidies ranging from EUR30 to EUR80 per week.

County childcare committees have objected to the scheme in Leitrim,Donegal, Roscommon, Westmeath and Monaghan.
