But working with your spouse, going into partnership with your sibling or employing your child can pose big managerial challenges.

The National Day Nurseries Association has no hard data on the number of businesses in the sector which are family-owned, but it is aware of such settings. This is not least because for many proprietors, one of the key reasons for starting their nursery was to meet their own childcare needs.

While it is only natural that families should go into business in a family-centred sector, nobody wants to be accused of nepotism. Rosie Pressland, principal of the Pocklington Montessori School near York, speaks for many when she says that she is probably tougher on her two children than on other members of staff.
