Jamie-Lee Coldham is the first part-time circus student, as well as the first male, to win the Heinemann and Nursery World Childcare Student of the Year Award.

With a record number of entries, the judges deliberated over four finalists and finally chose Jamie-Lee, who turns 17 next month and is studying for a CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education (DCE) at Blackpool and Flyde College.

His tutor, Lesley McCartney, nominated him because she said it had been evident from day one that he was ideally suited to a career in childcare.

'Jamie-Lee is an extremely mature lad and he's got such an insight into what children need. He has a really gentle way of coaxing them into doing things. He's very much a team member on the course, involving himself and supporting the other 18 students.'

Jamie-Lee's other passion is circus skills and he is an accomplished juggler. 'This is a fabulous interest to share with the children,' said Ms McCartney.

The runners-up for the award included two other male students, Matthew Campbell from Parliament Hill School in London (CCE) and James Kewley from Isle of Man College (DCE). Sarah Crane from Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire (DCE), was also among the finalists, having been nominated by her tutor Deborah Whittington.

All four students will receive their awards and prizes at the Early Years and Primary Teaching Exhibition in London on 29 September.
