'Keep families small' warning

Governments may be forced to limit family sizes in the future if more voluntary family planning is not taken up, a report has warned.

Youthquake is written by family planning expert Professor JohnGuillebaud of University College London for environmental organisationOptimum Population Trust. It hopes to highlight the lack of attentiongiven to this issue and calls for governments to introduce populationpolicies.

The OPT calculates that if families had one child less it would save theenergy equivalent of driving three million miles in a Toyota Prius inthe absent child's lifetime.

Professor Guillebaud said, 'The major environmental charities don't talkabout this issue because they are too frightened. People think you areadvocating a one-child, Big Brother-style control. Population policieswould be about family planning and finding things that influence familysize, but with no coercion.

'The birth control pill and the IUD are as much icons of theenvironmental movement as my bicycle is,' he added.
