Local authorities invited to bid

Local authorities and Primary Care Trusts have been invited to bid for a 20m, two-year pilot scheme for free school meals, unveiled by children's secretary Ed Balls and health secretary Alan Johnson.

The scheme, due to start in September, will be available to two localauthorities testing the free school lunches offer for primary schoolchildren and a third authority testing the extended eligibility to freeschool meals.
