Head teacher at Woodacre Nursery, Margaret Deeney, praised the 'overwhelming' support from the local community since a suspicious blaze two weeks ago destroyed most of the nursery's play areas, toys, equipment and teaching materials.
Some of the equipment in the burnt building was retrieved and cleaned up with the help of a local cleaning firm and other local services. Nitshill Primary School will now be the nursery's temporary home.
Ms Deeney said that because the fire happened on the Sunday of a holiday week, parents had already told their children by the time they returned the following Monday. 'Several parents said their children had burst into tears at the news. They were obviously very distressed about it.
'However, most of the children have adapted to the transition very well.
One little boy who speaks three different languages acted as spokesman for the rest and came up to me and said "we are all very happy". Others have been more nervous, but many of them know the primary school already and some will be going there shortly.'
The nursery staff decided that the best way to welcome the children back a week after the blaze was by getting them to play initially in the playground, rather than gathering them all inside to talk formally about the incident.
She said the response from the local community had been magnificent with several major firms, including McDonalds, B&Q and the local bingo hall, offering their support.
Ms Deeney added, 'I've been completely overwhelmed with the sympathy the local people have shown. Children and parents have been bringing me boxes of sweets and lovely cards to say how much they care for the school.
'Everyone has rallied round to help - the local community council, council staff, parents, everyone. I'm obviously over the moon about the possibility of reopening at Woodcare in a few months' time.'
