A week of farewell parties is planned for the manager of one of Westminster Children's Society's community childcare centres and lead SENCO for all the voluntary organisation's nurseries, who is retiring after 31 years of service.

Maureen Wale will be saying goodbye to staff, parents and children from past and present.

Ms Wale said, 'The children think I am leaving to go to infant school, like the other children do when they leave nursery.

'But I'm going to take some time off, and enjoy not having to get up at 5.30am to commute in to London from Kent. I'm going to recharge my batteries and relax over the summer, and then decide whether to do voluntary or consultancy work.'

She added, 'To work for a nursery in the West End of London has been unique. There are a lot of families and a real community in the area.'

Ms Wale, who has worked with children since she was 18, has seen many changes during her time working in childcare.

She said, 'Everything was done by pen and paper when I started out, so I've had to learn ICT skills, and how to use technology with the children. I've also seen the introduction of Ofsted inspections, Every Child Matters and the Foundation Stage.'

She added, 'I'm looking forward to the future, but I'm going to miss the children, colleagues and friends I've made over the years. It is a very emotional time. Thirty-one years sounds like a very long time, but it feels like every day has been different.'
