In a statement to the House of Commons, Secretary of State for Children,Schools and Families Ed Balls likened the move to how the Government hadimplemented the Rose report into the way children are taught to read.'The next step is to raise our game in maths and build on the successfulnumeracy strategy that we launched nearly ten years ago,' he said.
The review into maths teaching for early years and primary will be ledby Sir Peter Williams, chair of the Advisory Committee on MathematicsEducation.
Mr Balls told MPs, 'His review will look at effective methods ofteaching and learning in primary schools and nurseries. He will adviseus on how to develop pupils' deeper understanding of maths and on thedevelopment of our Every Child Counts pilots, to help pupils fallingbehind in primary schools.'
