Organisers of the event - the Daycare Trust and supported by the Department for Education and Skills, the National Day Nurseries Association, the National Childminding Association, the Pre-school Learning Alliance and the Kids' Clubs Network - will each be running a week of activities.
During National Day Nurseries Week (3 to 9 June) nurseries across the country will be able to join in a sponsored Sunflower Challenge, run in conjunction with the WaterAid charity. NDNA chief executive Rosemary Murphy said, 'The sunflower growing scheme is an excellent early years project as well as a chance to raise money for a good cause.' Sunflower Challenge packs containing seeds and everything needed to take part have been sent to all NDNA member nurseries.
At the start of National Childminding Week (15 to 22 June) the National Childminding Association celebrates its 25th anniversary with a reception at the House of Commons.
During Play Week (17 to 23 June) the Pre-School Learning Alliance will be running a range of activities showcasing the childcare and family learning activities that community-based pre-schools provide, including teddy bears'
picnics and giant parties attended by thousands of parents and children.
During Kids' Clubs Week (24 to 30 June), children will be able to make a wish and record it on a 'wish fish', which will be collected and given to political leaders to let them know what children really want from them, their parents and their schools.
Other highlights of the week will include the Excellence in Childcare Awards, which will take place at the Tate Modern gallery and will be attended by Cherie Booth QC.
