Music Teacher has launched its next conference, Next Steps for Curriculum Music: Beyond the Noise, which will take place in person on 5 July at the Hallam Conference Centre in London.
Curated by MT’s editor Harriet Clifford, the one-day conference will enable primary – specialist or generalist – and secondary music teachers to come together towards the end of another turbulent academic year.
Drawing on their wide-ranging experience, expert speakers will explore curriculum music in the context of recent policy changes, challenges, research, progress, and ideas that have a direct impact on those on the ground. Carefully curated keynote presentations will raise ‘bigger picture’ ideas to be explored further in the workshop-style breakout sessions, split into primary and secondary.
By the 5 July, the refreshed National Plan for Music Education is expected to have been published, and the conference will be able opportunity for music teachers to reflect on and digest its contents, applying the document and its implications to their classrooms.
Speakers leading sessions throughout the day and joining a teacher wellbeing panel to close the conference include Catherine Barker, Sue Walker, Jimmy Rotheram, Benjamin Turner, Deborah Annetts, Dr Jodie Underhill, Christopher Stevens HMI, Kathryn Levell, Alex Aitken, Yogesh Dattani, Helen MacGregor, Jo Thomas, Beatrice Hubble, and Chris Walters.
Clifford said: ‘I feel that this conference couldn’t come at a better time. Music teachers have been bombarded by seemingly endless reports, plans and reviews over the last year, and everyone just needs a chance to take stock, clear a path through the jargon, and work out what it all means for them, their classroom, and their students.
‘I’m delighted to be joined by so many fantastic speakers, who each brings extensive and impressive on-the-ground experience. I think this will be a really exciting event and I hope to see as many people there as possible.’
