Egg shakers
As a general rule, I don't think that it is necessary to buy lots of identical small instruments. But I do think it's worth buying a collection of egg shakers (called egg maracas in some catalogues). These come in varied colours. There are also fruit shakers, and little wooden shakers in many shapes. Egg shakers sit well in a small hand and their smooth shape is pleasing to hold. The sound is light enough not to drown out young children's singing, nor will they upset those children who are sensitive to louder sounds.
