* Awake 3.45am. Take partner a bowl of porridge and coffee at 5am. He says he has hardly digested his takeaway.
* Collect fish of the day out of the freezer in the utility room.
* In school 6am.
* Write letters, do paperwork.
* Put today's fish, a snapper, in classroom. This time I've remembered the ice.
* Find map of the world to mark where fish comes from.
* I spend much of the day mounting and labelling photographs.
* Thank goodness weather is dry today.
* Parents and children carry on enthusiastically with all the activities in the school.
* Two parents comment that it is sad that not all parents have become involved in the week.
* School secretary takes responsibility for fastening fireflies to the ceiling with safety pins. The Year 6 teacher says he hasn't worked with crepe paper in years. Now on two consecutive days he finds he is doing nothing else! He is busy fastening coloured crepe paper up the banisters and across the ceiling in the hallway.
* We talk about how his children are enjoying the project. I ask him if they would write about what they have done during the week and could I have copies? He says he wasn't going to bother but now he will.
* Children from Special Needs Unit integrate for the afternoon.
* Everyone says it is much calmer today now that the major things have been put up on the walls. Children start to play more with other equipment.
* One of the mothers has been in school for three days. She says she now puts on her oldest clothes. We notice that the children are wearing older and older clothes as the week progresses.
* Former chair of governors visits. While we talk I cut out and laminate more fireflies.
* My neighbours visit at the end of the afternoon. By the time I collect them at the front door they are wearing firefly hats. I give them a guided tour of the building and they keep wearing them. While talking to them about the school I photocopy, laminate and bind pages from A House for Hermit Crab. We couldn't find one anywhere. I do hope I won't get into trouble for breach of copyright.
* I take films to the chemists.
* Get home around 7pm. Friend arrives with book of pictures of exotic fish to take into school tomorrow.
* Collect items for the display table in the hall.
* In bed at 9pm. Awake at midnight. Go through fish book, sticking post-it notes on the pages of appropriate fish.
