London has the worst rates of child poverty in Great Britain, with 41 per cent of all children in the city living in poverty, compared with 28 per cent of children nationwide.
The London Child Poverty Commission will identify appropriate policies at national and local levels and ways to break the cycle of deprivation through the delivery of the capital's public services.
Commission chair Carey Oppenheim said, 'London's prosperity masks shockingly high rates of child poverty. The Commission will work closely with the voluntary and statutory sector, employers, front-line practitioners and families who are struggling to make ends meet.'
Chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group and commission member Kate Green said, 'When more than half of children in inner London and over a third in outer London are growing up in poverty, it's clear the Commission has a huge job to do.'
