New guide to working with twos

A new guide to caring for two-year-olds by child development expert Penny Tassoni has been published today.

With the imminent increase in numbers of two-year-olds in early years settings, president of the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY) Ms Tassoni has released Getting it right for two year olds, published by Hodder Education, for childcare professionals looking to improve on practice and outcomes for the age group.

The book examines the key features of two-year-olds’ development and identifies priority areas such as speech, language and emotional development, providing advice for practitioners on how to create suitable environments in which to work more effectively with the age group, and how to carry out the two-year-old progress check. It also explores the specific play needs of two-year-olds and includes dedicated activities linking these to the EYFS framework.

pennytassoniMs Tassoni said, ‘The reality is that great thought and care is needed if two-year-olds are to flourish in our settings. Contrary to the views of some policy makers, they are not just shorter versions of three-year-olds! They think differently, play differently and this is what makes them so special. I hope that this book will offer practical, valued advice for all childcare professionals to ensure that they can offer the highest quality of care to our youngest children.’

Liz Bayram, chief executive of PACEY, added, ‘This book offers a solid foundation for improving our thinking around how to offer the very best care for two year old children in childcare settings across the country and I hope that it proves a valuable resource for existing and future childcare professionals.’

  • Penny Tassoni will be speaking at Nursery World’s Two-year-olds: policy and practice conference in London on 9 July. The Early Bird delegate rate of £249 is available until 4 June.
