New online service for CRB checks

From next month nurseries and childminders will be able to access criminal record checks online.

The Disclosure and Barring Service is introducing the new 'update service' from 17 June.

The DBS says that the new online service will make it easier for early years workers and childminders to re-use their checks, and speed up the recruitment process and save money for providers.

The introduction of the new online system follows news last month that providers and individuals will need to pay for CRB checks from July, when the Government removes the subsidy.

However, by subscribing to the update system, employees will only have to apply once to the DBS for a certificate, which can then be updated and viewed online as they move jobs. As long as there are no changes to their status - so unless they are cautioned by the police or convicted of a crime - individuals should be able to keep the same DBS check indefinitely, because checks will be transferable.

The new update service has an annual subscription of £13 and is free to volunteers. A spokesperson for the DBS said it would be particularly suitable for people moving from job to job or who have multiple roles. Each subscriber is given an individual account number which they can then pass on to employers to check their status.

Individuals can renew or cancel your subscription at any time.

Nursery managers will be able to carry out periodic status checks on their employees' DBS account and can conduct single or multiple checks.

The DBS says that employers will be able to retain the same recruitment policies relating to obtaining DBS checks by replacing a new application with a status check.

Adrienne Kelbie, DBS chief executive officer, said, 'This new online service will transform how the early years sector uses criminal record checks. The Update Service is particularly ideal for individuals who have multiple DBS checks, or are required to be re-checked periodically.

'Nurseries, crèches and childcare providers and their employees will benefit from a service which will reduce time and costs associated with recruitment and improve the convenience and accessibility of our services.'

Under the new arrangement employers and employees will have to pay £26 for a standard check, and £44 for an enhanced check, in order to be registered with Ofsted, and to be employed in a registered childcare setting.

The Government says this brings the early years sector into line with the school and social care sectors, which do not benefit from a subsidy.

It also says that there will be a long-term cost saving with the introduction of transferable checks.
