New standards for lunches

Primary school lunches came under new standards last week, specifying maximum fat, sugar and salt levels for meals, and minimum levels of key vitamins and minerals.

New menus introduced across England include healthier versions oftraditional favourites such as chilli con carne and shepherds pie.School Food Trust chairman Prue Leith said, 'This is an essential stepin ensuring that all children, no matter what their background, can havea hot healthy meal. Parents of children starting school for the firsttime today can be assured their child's school meal will nourish theirbrains and bodies and give them energy to succeed in all they do.'
