Mr Balls said on the BBC that the SATs, taken by about one millionchildren aged seven, 11 and 14 across England each May, could bereplaced by assessments tailored to the ability of each child. TheGovernment ended its contract with private contractors ETS after what MrBalls called a 'fiasco' with this year's exam marking, and its newcontract with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority is for oneyear only.
