- Slippery fun
Tomato sauce and spaghetti were the perfect ingredients for messy play in the baby room at Footsteps Day Nursery in Tamworth, Staffordshire, during a session to encourage under-threes to explore their senses and use their imaginations.
- Recycling success
Children at Stanlaw Abbey Community Nursery in Ellesmere Port, Merseyside, have been doing their bit for the environment by recycling paper, cardboard and plastics. The nursery parents meanwhile have been taking part in an environmentally friendly paperless billing campaign, sending invoices via e-mail.
- Heroic creativity
It was Superhero Week at Hatton Hill Day Nursery in Windlesham, Surrey, and children turned up in fancy dress and used computers to design superhero costumes and create stories. Pre-school principal Claire Silva said, 'Everyone enjoyed taking part in the activity, particularly the boys, who were inspired to get into mark-making and storytelling.'
- Dine with the mayor
Children and staff from Nutkins Nursery in Cleveleys, Lancashire, were invited to have lunch with the Mayor of Cleveleys in recognition of their receiving a bronze award in the local Wyre in Bloom competition, for transforming the nursery's outdoor space into a sensory nature garden.

- New for book daY
Initiatives for this year's World Book Day on Thursday 4 March include a new online campaign by Renaissance Learning called Read to a Million Kids, which aims to get a million children around the country listening to various authors and performers reading story extracts on the internet. A special Thomas the Tank Engine picture book priced at £1 is being published, and over 13 million £1 World Book Day tokens are being distributed to schools and pre-schools who register. - Photo of the weeK Children at Benger Bears Pre-School in Sutton Benger, Wiltshire, are delighted with the three new gazebos they have in the patio area of the village hall where they are based, thanks to a grant of £270 from the Church Piece Trust Committee. Benger Bears supervisor Karen Swannack said, 'We have wanted the gazebos for a long time and know they will be used every day. They will make the play area more accessible whatever the weather conditions.'
