A Stormont spending watchdog is concerned about the amount of cash – estimated to be hundreds of thousands of pounds – involved in keeping teachers out of work.
Teachers can be placed on precautionary suspension for three main reasons. These include allegations of misconduct or of a child protection nature. They can also be suspended by governors on medical or health and safety grounds.
Between 2010 and this year, the cost of salaries, pension contributions and National Insurance contributions paid to suspended teachers topped £4.2 million. It is not known how much of this figure relates to primary and how much relates to secondary.
