Anew wave of 425 beacon and 650 specialist schools have been named by education and skills secretary Estelle Morris.

Triangle Nursery School in the London borough of Lambeth was among the new beacon schools aiming to deliver excellence and raise standards in the early years sector.

Triangle Nursery School, based in an inner-city area, is attended by 33 full-time and 56 part-time children.

The nursery school works closely with parents through discussions and workshops to involve them in their children's curriculum and in their own development. It intends to share its good practice with other schools in Lambeth and to develop an area support group for all providers in early years education to stimulate debate on successful practices.

Head teacher Debbie Hardy said, 'We have already been working with the non-maintained sector to help develop planning and support them for Ofsted. I now want to extend and develop that work.

'We will also be used as a base of good practice in the area and people will be spending the day with us to see how we operate. We hope to find funding so we can go out and help release staff to come and spend the day with us.'

She said the school places an emphasis on the development of ICT to support the curriculum.

There are now 1,000 beacon schools in England which have been identified as achieving a high level of performance for others to emulate.

Ms Morris said the Department for Education and Skills is focusing on assisting schools in the most disadvantaged and underachieving areas of the country. She said, 'Our priority in this Parliament is to build on the higher standards happening in our primary schools and spread best practice right across the secondary sector.

'These new specialist and beacon schools will help us to realise that aim by fostering a culture of innovation and allowing schools to learn from each other. We want all schools to be able to build on their own unique character, play to their strengths and be a part of an education system that celebrates diversity.'
