First Step training has been developed by the Basic Skills Agency, so nursery workers who are trusted by parents and carers can help them to play a greater part in their child's learning.
The accredited two-day training programme is being piloted by the local authorities in Leeds, Norfolk, Birmingham and London's Haringey. It is particularly aimed at managers and key staff in Neighbourhood Nurseries and will be offered nationally to Neighbourhood Nurseries.
The course aims to help nursery staff to understand the difficulties facing parents and carers with poor reading and writing skills. It will train nursery staff to recognise which adults have low basic skills and where they can be referred for help.
