SPRING CHICKENS

Early years settings across the country have been busy caring for hatching chicks as children learn about life cycles. Children from Busy Bees Nursery in Fallowfield, Manchester (top), Abbeymoore Day Nursery in Reading (bottom), Great Wood Farm Early Years Centre in Grantham, Snapdragons Nursery in Bath, Footsteps in Dosthill, Tamworth, kidsunlimited in Ely, Cambridgeshire, Tops Day Nursery in Portsmouth, and Busy Bees at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry, were all delighted to see the chicks emerge from their shells.

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY

Willowtree Nursery and Pre-School in Wembley, Middlesex, organised a multicultural garden party to celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of the children and parents who come to the setting. Nursery manager Carole Grimes said, 'A great day was had by all, with opportunities for the children, parents and staff to join together and develop their understanding of different beliefs and cultures.'

ROW YOUR SHAKER

Children from Grena Road Pre-school in Richmond, Surrey, made musical instruments for the babies at the setting. The pre-school children filled plastic containers with mung beans, black-eyed beans and lentils to create shakers to give to the babies, who joined in with the rhyme Row, Row Your Boat.

TOP MARKS

Clever Clogs Day Nursery in Belmont, Durham, has been rated outstanding by Ofsted in its latest inspection. The inspectors commented on children being confident and enthusiastic to learn in a welcoming and bright environment. A key strength, they said, was the development of children's independence and promotion of active learning throughout the nursery.

A TREE FOR ACORNS

Little Acorns Day Nursery in Urmston, Manchester, had one of its trees shaped into the nursery's logo with mascot Ally Acorn. The children are all very pleased with their new companion, says the nursery.

HERE WE GO LOOBY LOU

Children and adults at Looby Lou's Nursery in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, raised more than £500 for Cancer Research UK at a fun day where activities included a bouncy castle, face painting and pizza making.

OUTDOOR DECORATING

Children from Playdays Daycare Nursery in Bolton, Greater Manchester, were very proud of the mobile they made and hung on a tree outside the setting.
