AN APPLE A DAY

Child First nursery in Northampton joined forces with Southcourt Environmental Group to mark 'Apple Day', an annual celebration of apples and orchards in England, on 21 October. As part of the event the children picked and prepared apples which were then pressed to make juice and enjoyed at tea time, with jacket potatoes cooked over a fire.

A ROYAL OCCASSION

Children at Highfield Nursery School in Chorley, Lancashire, enjoyed living a life of royalty for a week. For their mini topic, which followed on from their interest in pirates, the children dressed as princes and princesses and took part in role-play in their very own castle. Activities included making crowns and jewellery, and a tea party with miniature cakes made by the children.

DOGS AT WORK

Ringwood Day Nursery in Hampshire had a visit from Guide Dogs for the Blind to enhance their topic about pets. Along with learning about how important guide dogs are to the visually impaired, the children got the chance to meet a working dog and 16-week-old puppy in training.

SHARED HARVEST

Bright Comets Day Nursery in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, gathered in fresh fruit and vegetables to give to residents of a local care home to mark the Harvest Festival.

PARTY BALLOONS

Kidsunlimited's Mary Seacole Nursery in London celebrated 20 years of caring for children with a party for current and past children and families, at which they released 100 balloons.

PERFECT IN PINK

Lindum Day Nursery in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, helped raise money for the charity Breast Cancer Campaign with a Wear It Pink Day. Staff and children donated £2 each to dress in pink and take part in themed activities.

BAKE AWAY

Little Oaks Nursery in Folkestone, Kent, observed National Baking Week, 17-23 October, with cookery and a visit to a local supermarket where they were given a tour of the bakery. The children enjoyed it so much that they ended the week by selling cakes they had made to raise money for more baking resources.

WASTE MANAGERS

Children at Holyrood Nurseries in Altrincham, Cheshire, visited Fresh Start Waste Service, a waste management and recycling company in Manchester, to discover what happens to their rubbish after they throw it away. The children were given hard hats and high visibility jackets to wear as they watched cardboard, glass and cans being recycled, as well as a number of other demonstrations. Inspired by their visit, the children have turned their role-play area into a recycling centre.

SING AND SIGN

Oldland Pre-School in Oldham Common, Bristol, held a Sing and Sign Day in support of the 'Hello' National Year of Communication campaign.

EARLY OUTSTANDING

Start Well Learning Pre-School in Winsford, Cheshire, was delighted to achieve an Outstanding from Ofsted after being open for less than a year.

WACKY VEGETABLES

Tadpoles Nursery in Maldon, Essex, won first place in the Wackiest Vegetable competition at a village fete with its 'cuddling carrot family'. The big, medium and small carrots were grown at the nursery's allotment, along with beetroot, leeks and pumpkins.

WITCHES AND WIZARDS

Nurseries in their hundreds dressed as witches, ghosts and ghouls to mark Halloween on 31 October. At Busy Bees Nursery in Walsgrave, Coventry they had a party and made Winnie the Witch cakes and wizard hats, while babies at Footsteps Day Nursery in Farnborough, Hampshire (below) enjoyed a spooky tea.

 

Children at Little Acorns Nursery in Gomersal, West Yorkshire (below) carved pumpkins and took part in other Halloween themed activities. Stepping Stones Day Nursery in Lingley Mere, Warrington (middle) enjoyed a spooky party and at Little Acorns in Stanlaw, Cheshire.(bottom) children dressed as witches and pumpkins.
