Nutritional value
Like all berries, blackberries (also known as brambles) are highly nutritious. They contain calcium, potassium, magnesium, several B vitamins and carotene, and are a good source of vitamin C. They also have smaller amounts of iron, manganese and vitamin E. They are the last of the seasonal summer berries.
Using blackberries
Blackberries are a wonderful seasonal treat. They can be picked as soon as they turn black, which is usually from late August until the first frosts, after which they are not worth eating. Wild blackberries tend to have more flavour than cultivated ones, although all are good. Look for the thorny briars growing in hedgerows, around the edges of sports fields and on waste ground.
