Obesity spurs ad campaign

Healthy living is being promoted in a New Year advertising campaign by the Government.

The campaign, which is part of the Change4Life initiative, warns that a bad diet and inactive lifestyle can lead to cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Television adverts put together by the team behind 'Wallace and Gromit' will run for three months.

Children and families are invited to call 0300 1234567 or visit the Change4Life website, where they can search for services in their local area such as cookery clubs, after-school activities and sporting facilities.

The Change4Life initiative follows Government-sponsored research published last year, which found that a quarter of children would be obese by 2050 if current UK trends continue (news, 24 October 2007). The study, Tackling Obesities: Future Choices, recommended early intervention to establish appropriate child growth, healthy eating and activity habits.
