Ofsted clarifies EYFS concerns for playworkers

New guidance confirming that playworkers should not have to change their existing practice to meet the requirements of the EYFS has been published by Ofsted.

Regulating Play-Based Provision suggests that the Playwork Principles can work alongside the EYFS requirements, and that good playworkers should already be meeting the Planning and Observation requirements to identify and build on children's interests.

The guidance is the result of talks that Skills Active had with Ofsted, highlighting the concerns of employers and practitioners over the introduction of the Early Years Register and the requirement for staff to hold a full qualification (Analysis, 10 June).

Stephen Studd, chief executive of SkillsActive, said, 'It is encouraging to see that Ofsted has recognised that play-based provision is compatible with the EYFS and we hope that this factsheet will make Ofsted inspections clearer for the play sector.'

The Department for Children, Schools and Families is planning to review the EYFS in September 2010 and Skills Active will work closely with them to ensure playworkers views are represented.

They also provide clear information on some of the requirements for play based provisions and highlight practitioners' main areas of concern, such as qualifications and ratios, requirements of the EYFS and information on registration.
