With summer almost here, families are embarking on trips by car, train or plane, and chances are that as a nanny you will be asked to go with them.
Travelling any distance by any means with small children can be a daunting prospect, but it does come with the nannies' territory.
Journeys of any length, even for a day out, require some forward planning if you and the children are to arrive feeling reasonably sane and happy. If at all possible, try to start a long journey by car just before the time a baby or toddler usually has his daytime nap, or drive through the night if you can. Long car journeys can be very stressful, for passengers as well as drivers, so plan to make regular stops along the way to allow children to stretch their legs and let off some steam. While they're seated, story and music tapes are great for in-car entertainment - take along a selection of both new and well-loved ones to suit different moods.
