The city's children and families estate was put under review in May whenthe council said there had been a fall in pupil numbers (News, 7 June).The council is consulting on the future of Cameron House Nursery School,Grassmarket Nursery School, High School Yards Nursery School, PrincessElizabeth Nursery School, Victoria Park Child and Family Centre andWestfield Court Nursery School.
If the proposals go ahead the number of full-time nursery places willfall from 1,054 to 700.
Tina Woolnough, chair of Parents in Partnership, a local parents' bodycampaigning against the nursery closures, said, 'We're trying to use ourwebsite to help everyone in their local campaigns. It is clearly aboutbudget shortfalls and what we are asking is that they revisit the budgetand prioritise children and families. They claim that by shuttingsmaller establishments there will be more money for larger ones.'
Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, convenor for Education and Children andFamilies, said, 'Our aim is for all young people in Edinburgh to receivea first-class education in high-quality buildings that are fit forpurpose and meet the needs of learners in the 21st century.
'Before decisions are made an extensive consultation will take placelooking at each establishment separately. We will listen to the views ofthe people in the communities involved.'
