As millions of parents sign up to renew their Working Tax Credit claims before the end of this month, the Government is coming under increased pressure to sort out the chaos surrounding this key element of its war on child poverty.

The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) is leading the campaign calling for an amnesty on all tax credit overpayments made during 2003/04 and 2004/05 other than those due to fraud by the claimant.

CPAG head of policy and research Dr Paul Dornan says an amnesty now, at the start of the new claim period, would give the Government the time and space to sort out the current confusion and put changes in place to ensure the tax credit system works effectively. 'Otherwise it is just going to perpetuate the problem rather than putting resources to solving it.'
