Play schemes helped to bid for 13m

Playworkers in Wales are to be given support in developing local play strategies so they can bid for a share of the Big Lottery Fund's (BIG) 13m children's play programme. BIG has appointed Play Wales, the national organisation for children's play, to help applicants access the 'Child's Play' strand of BIG's new 20m Healthy Families programme, which aims to promote good health for the next generation.

BIG has appointed Play Wales, the national organisation for children's play, to help applicants access the 'Child's Play' strand of BIG's new 20m Healthy Families programme, which aims to promote good health for the next generation.

Mike Greenaway, director of Play Wales, said, 'We are pleased to be chosen as the organisation with the expertise to help the Welsh play sector.'

Play Wales will be working with BIG over the next three years to create new initiatives and facilities in line with the Welsh Assembly government's play strategy, Play in Wales, launched in February (News, 23 February).

The remaining 7m of Healthy Families funding is to be spent on the 'Way of Life' strand, intended to develop links between nutrition and physical activity.
