Despite there being no outdoor play area at Newcraigs Playgroup in Kircaldy, Fife, staff were praised for making good use of available space within the building for energetic play. The playgroup provided a 'safe and stimulating environment' and 'there were regular opportunities for children to develop skills and engage in energetic physical play through the use of the climbing frame and games equipment'.
The playleader at Towerlands Farm Playgroup in Irvine, North Ayrshire, was praised for good leadership. The report said, 'She was hardworking and committed to her vision for the playgroup. She had established good relationships with staff and parents and was well supported by an active management committee. The staff worked well as a team and met regularly to plan the work of the playgroup.'
A notice board and newsletters provided parents with helpful information about playgroup activities and there was a suggestion book to seek parents'
views on the playgroup's work.
A bright and attractive playroom at James Watt College Nursery in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, was noted for providing children with a stimulating learning environment. The nursery's programme for knowledge and understanding of the world was also praised. The report said, 'Staff encouraged children to observe growth and change in plants. They made good use of visitors and visits to extend children's knowledge of people and places. The children had good opportunities to explore natural materials and their properties.'
Inspectors said children at Carriagehill Nursery in Paisley, Renfrewshire, were well motivated and eager to participate in all aspects of the curriculum. The inspector said they responded positively to opportunities to make choices in their play activities and there was a good balance between free play and more adult-directed activities.
Samples of children's activities and artwork were kept in individual folders and staff maintained records of children's progress in the curriculum.
Crossroads Pre-school Nursery, Inchture, was praised for the good arrangements for assessing and recording children's development and achievements, including photographic evidence.
