Pre-school volunteers honoured

The work of pre-school volunteers around the country was celebrated at the Pre-School Learning Alliance's annual conference in London.

Frances Rodgers, chair of the Pre-School Learning Alliance's Lewisham Sub-Committee in south London, was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award on 17 June.

Ms Rodgers was presented with the award by the PLA’s former chair of trustees, Judith Thompson during their 50th anniversary conference and AGM, which included the charity’s Volunteer Awards.

Volunteer Frances Rodgers was honoured with the award for her dedication to ensuring good services for children and families, after opening her first playgroup in 1964 in a church hall, followed by two more playgroups and a day nursery. Over the last 50 years she has also attended marches to save playgroups, organised fun days and continues to act as an independent representative for many early years groups locally.

The other winners of the Volunteer awards were:

Kirsty Curtis from Ashdon Pre-School in Saffron Walden, Essex (outstanding pre-school committee volunteer) Joylin Mclean of St Phillips Baby and Toddler Group in Croydon, Surrey (baby and toddler group); and Jenny Reeves from Dimson Day Nursery in Gunnislake, Cornwall (volunteer at a pre-school or nursery).

Last week, Judith Thompson was made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to families.
