Relevant sections in the framework will mirror the Early Years Foundation Stage as it is developed to support continuity in the transition between the Foundation Stage and Year 1. Materials to be added include any changes to the early years sections.
The revised framework takes into account changes that have occurred since the original document was published in the late 1990s, including support for settings and schools in implementing the recommendations of the Rose Review on using phonics to teach children to read.
Paul Wagstaff, national director for the Primary National Strategy, said, 'There will be much in the framework that is familiar, but we believe that the new format will give teachers and practitioners greater flexibility, clearer guidance and greater support for planning progression.'
The new format is intended to ensure that guidance for Foundation Stage practitioners is consistent in both documents.
The document states, 'Schools and settings will find that the guidance provided in the literacy and mathematics framework for the Foundation Stage matches the sections in the Early Years Foundation Stage on communication, language and literacy and problem solving, reasoning and literacy.'
Year 1 teachers are expected to be familiar with the Early Years Foundation Stage to support transition for children.
Commenting last week on the relationship between the new framework and the EYFS, children's minister Beverley Hughes told Nursery World, 'What we want to do is make sure they're aligned and speak the same language, so that practitioners can see how they link together.'
