The new EYFS framework sets out that rich activities and experiences are central to children's development in its three prime areas: communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development.

This has led to many nurseries enhancing their outdoor play activitiesand has inspired Nursery World's latest collection of training DVDboxsets.

So where are most nurseries with outdoor play and what constitutes real, meaningful learning here? Julie Mountain, who is director of outdoorplay consultancy Play Learning Life and is one of the DVD's presenters, asserts that nurseries and childminders need to think laterally abouthow they use play equipment to reap the full benefit. This coverseverything from the layout of your outdoor area through to using it inthe best way possible to enhance active learning.

Julie's co-presenter in the DVDs, Gail Ryder-Richardson, who is earlyyears consultant for Outdoor Matters, expands on this, observing babies, toddlers and adults interacting outdoors using various equipment in avariety of activites. The aim of the DVDs is to offer creative yetpractical advice to help nurseries enhance cognitive, emotional, socialand physical development in line with the EYFS framework, using outdoorplay.
