Resources released to support schools’ involvement with Safer Internet Day

A range of resources have been launched to help schools mark this year’s Safer Internet Day, which takes place on Tuesday, February 7.

The resources explore the power of image and video in young people’s digital lives and include films, photography projects, lesson plans and presentations.

Safer Internet Day 2017 has the slogan “Be the change: Unite for a better internet” and the main goal is to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for young people.

The event is organised in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre and schools are being asked to:

  • Engage students by running assemblies or class activities using the Safer Internet Day Education Packs.
  • Join a photography campaign to empower students to create engaging images that communicate a message.
  • Reach out to parents and carers by running a session or sharing information using the Parent and Carer Pack.
  • Join the social media campaign about the safe use of technology and use the #giveasmile templates to encourage pupils to create their own emoji or share positive messages.

Among the resources, the Education Packs explore key internet safety topics through assembly presentations and scripts, lesson plans, quizzes, quick activities and whole-school activities. The UK Safer Internet Centre has also released accompanying films looking at the same themes.

The Education Pack for Parents and Carers helps schools to deliver sessions and share resources with parents and carers about keeping their children safe online. This includes practical conversation starters, factsheets, as well as a presentation and script.

Will Gardner, director of UK Safer Internet Centre, said: “Safer Internet Day is a moment in the year where children and young people, parents and carers and schools can all come together and talk openly and honestly about the positives of the internet as well as the potential risks.

“With an ever-changing landscape, it is more important than ever to equip young people with the critical thinking skills they need to navigate the online world. These new educational and film resources will provoke discussion and inspire young people to be at the forefront of creating a better and safer internet."
