Schools secretary Ed Balls has announced plans to cut education spending by 2bn after 2011. In an interview with the Sunday Times, Mr Balls said savings could be made by restraining public sector pay, including in education, and cutting jobs among senior school staff such as head teachers, deputies and heads of departments. He said that teachers' jobs would remain safe and class size numbers would not increase. Dr John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said, 'The claim that the number of heads and senior school staff can be reduced without damaging teaching quality is manifestly false.'
