Scotland's curriculum guidance promotes outdoor learning

The Scottish Government is to issue a DVD to every nursery, pre-school and primary school in Scotland as part of a drive to promote outdoor learning and ease the transition between pre-school and primary.

'Curriculum for Excellence: Supporting the Early Level' is part of the Scottish government's Curriculum for Excellence guidance, known as Experiences and Outcomes, which was published earlier this year. The guidance focuses on improving numeracy and literacy and aims to help teachers with their lesson planning. The DVD will offer advice on developing successful practice in areas such as active learning, self-evaluation, additional support needs and the learning environment, including outdoors.

Children's minister Adam Ingram launched the DVD at the Fox Covert nursery in Edinburgh last week. He said, 'Curriculum for Excellence is promoting active teaching and learning which meets the needs of young people and prepares them for life in a modern, dynamic world. This DVD will mean that drive starts early so that our children have every chance to fulfil their potential.'
