Settings can make their mark with art

Schools and nurseries again have the opportunity to apply for the Arts Council's benchmark award for arts provision and creativity in education.

The Artsmark award scheme recognises achievements in art, dance, dramaand music. The application process for 2009 began last month andprovides a chance to evaluate and audit a school's arts provision. Earlyyears settings can only apply if they are attached to a school with KeyStage 1 pupils.

The award was launched in 2005. This year the Arts Council England hasgiven 1,438 schools a Gold, Silver, or first level Artsmark award.

Lisa Colclough, art and design co-ordinator at Oakefield Primary andNursery School in Crewe, which was awarded a Gold this year, said,'Artsmark is about recognising your achievements and shows what thewhole school is doing in terms of creativity. It gives you recognitionfor the quality of arts you are doing in your school.
