Short notice given of vetting changes

Nurseries are now able to choose one of three companies to carry out Criminal Records Bureau checks in changes to the arrangements for vetting staff in registered daycare. Under the new system, which came into force on 3 October, Ofsted will no longer carry out checks on nursery staff. It will continue to carry out checks on the registered person and the person in charge.

The three organisations nurseries can use to process CRB Disclosure applications are Capita Education Resourcing (CER), TMG CRB and Nestor Primecare Services, which also administers the Childcare Approval Scheme.

An Ofsted spokesperson confirmed that a letter was sent on 30 September to all registered providers and local authorities. It stated, 'As a result of these changes Ofsted can no longer process any applications from daycare staff for Disclosures from the Criminal Records Bureau. However, any such applications that were made before 3 October 2005 will be completed by Ofsted, as will any CRB checks that are required as part of any applications for daycare registration made before 3 October.'
