MASTERCLASSES AND SEMINARS

MASTERCLASSES

Friday 5 May, 9.30-12.30

Early maths: no problem?

These are exciting times in early years maths! Brain research is advancing our knowledge of how we learn about mathematical concepts, even when and why we make mistakes. The findings challenge formal methods of teaching and strengthen the case for experiential, play-based learning. To make sense of number, space, shape and measure, children have to ‘do’ maths – using their bodies and their minds – and in the right rich and supportive enabling environment, they can sidestep ‘maths anxiety’ to become part of a generation of confident maths learners. Led by highly renowned author and maths specialist Linda Pound, with early years experts Anne O’Connor and Tom Weaver, this masterclass is a must-attend for early years practitioners, and will provide a wonderful opportunity for attendees to be part of a stimulating and inspirational session.

Saturday 6 May, 9.30-12.30

Quality in early education: defining, assessing and delivering

laevers

Led by world-renowned early years pioneer Professor Ferre Laevers (pictured), and early years specialist Jan Dubiel, this masterclass will reflect on the importance and implications for practice of ‘well-being’ and ‘involvement’. These two areas, which Laevers has identified as the twin and fundamental traits underpinning successful development and early learning, are central to his research and contribution to early years practice. Delegates will also have the chance to participate in a Q&A. Laevers is director of the Research Centre for Experiential Education at the University of Leuven in Belgium, and co-presenter Jan Dubiel is national development manager at training and resources company Early Excellence.

Our fantastic programme of seminars includes sessions across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, with a line-up of expert speakers including Penny Tassoni, Dr Jacqui Hardie, Mine Conkbayir, Professor Padraic Monaghan, and Gill Jones.
