From September the Waltham Forest Council children's centre and extended school services will be open on a site incorporating College Gardens Nursery School, Wellington Primary School, children's centre services and youth services in Chingford, London.
Core services will include a 65-place nursery school for 48 weeks a year, breakfast and after-school clubs, a Job Centre Plus and health service support. There are plans to hold activities for 13- to 19-year-olds on three specific nights a week.
Chris Robbins, cabinet member for children and young people's services on Waltham Forest council, said, 'The sites were operating as three separate units and eventually we decided it would be best to physically join them all together and provide services all the way through from 0 to 19. It was about taking the opportunity of the proximity of the buildings and the enthusiasm of the school community.
'This was initiated by the two schools,' he added. 'The energy and enthusiasm has been excellent and has contributed to bring this project to fruition.'
The nursery and primary school are contributing 40,000 towards the building, with Waltham Forest children's services paying 540,000.
Project development officer Sue Martin said, 'It does give a seamless approach, so families will see it as a centre for everyone and nobody is cut off at a certain age.
'I think services can also be done in a more exciting way, such as some drop-in activities being made available to all.'
