WHY DID YOU JOIN BUSY BEES AS NURSERY CHEF BACK IN 1996?
I’ve always worked in catering – it’s what I knew. I also love children, so once mine had grown up I wanted to work somewhere surrounded by the energy that children bring while sharing my skills. I was at Belper Alton Manor when it first opened its doors, so I’ve been here since day one – I’m practically part of the furniture.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY OF YOUR TIME AT BUSY BEES?
I think Christmas is one of the most special times at our nursery. Watching children getting excited in the run-up to the big day, as well as planning all the catering and baking for parties and Christmas dinners, really helps get into the festive spirit.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR ROLE?
It has to be saying goodbye to children and families when they move on to school. You build such special relationships with them. Belper Alton Manor becomes a home from home, so when you have to say goodbye, it’s always a sad time. It’s always nice when their siblings join us, though – I feel so blessed to be a part of their development, especially after already seeing their brothers or sisters flourish. The rise of digital technology was also a challenge and it took me a while to get used to – especially online ordering! Luckily I had lots of amazing young colleagues who showed me the ropes and taught me everything I needed to know.
WHAT IS THE SECRET TO TAKING NO SICK DAYS IN YOUR CAREER?
My top tip for keeping fit and well is eating good food. I was so excited when I found out our menus were accredited by the NHS. It’s something I was really behind and I’m so proud we’re the only nursery group to have our food recognised.
HOW HAVE YOU MARKED YOUR RETIREMENT?
I was treated to the most wonderful surprise breakfast party with our children, families and staff. In my spare time I love walking and rambling, so we also had a celebratory weekend away. Now I plan to go and see the world. My first stop is Australia.
