Careers & Training
Name: Gina Martiradonna

Position: Gina recently completed her BTEC in Child and Social Care at Ashton Sixth Form College in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire

  • How did you feel about winning the first-ever National BTEC Awards, run by Pearson, for Outstanding Child and Social Care student?

I was extremely happy and honoured to be the only winner in my sector out of thousands of students. My head of department, Guy Marshall, nominated me for the award in recognition of what he called my hard work, can-do attitude and high standard of work.

  • Where was the ceremony held?

The awards were held at the Royal Society of Arts in London and hosted by the Radio One DJ Scott Mills. Peter Jones from 'Dragon's Den' was there, as well as stars of the TV series 'The Apprentice' and John Hayes, the Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning.

  • What are your plans now that you have finished your BTEC?

I have a place at Manchester Metropolitan University to study Primary Education in September to fulfil my dream to become a teacher. During the summer holidays I hope to return to one of the nurseries where I did a placement while I was at college and work with the pre-school children.
