Spotlight on ... Karen Ault

Name: Karen Ault

Position: Retired childminder, Castle Donington

What made you decide to invite all the children you have cared for to the renewal of your wedding vows?

I am changing jobs - I had worked with children for 25 years and it was a 25-year wedding vows renewal too. My husband said to me, 'Shall we renew our vows?' I agreed and I thought it would be a good time to celebrate with everyone that played a part in my life.

What were the reactions to this?

They were brilliant. Quite a lot of people really went for it. A lot of the children have special needs, so it was about letting everyone be involved. Out of about 150 children I cared for in the local area, 111 came to the ceremony.

What do you take out of 25 years of your career?

I have spent 25 years in the childcare sector, as a childminder and also having opened a playgroup and a pre-school. I see all the children around the village still. One of them is a teacher; one of them gave a talk at the vows renewal. So it's about seeing all these children grow up after taking care of them.

What's next for you?

I am doing lots of different things. I am still working with children in an after-school club. I am also a supply teacher's assistant. I am open to anything at the moment.
