Position: Owner of Little Green Rascals nursery in York
- How did you come to win the Macmillan Silver Spoon local hero award and be runner-up in the York Community Pride Award for Service with a Smile?
I was nominated for both awards by parents. For the Silver Spoon award I received a certificate and a huge hamper filled with baking ingredients, which I used to make a cake for the Macmillan World's Biggest Coffee Morning event we held at the nursery.
The nursery has also recently been awarded Investors in People and the gold award catering mark from the Soil Association.
- What did this involve?
To achieve Investors in People the nursery went though an assessment based entirely on staff interviews, which was good as it made all of the staff feel included, rather than just management. The nursery is the only setting in the north of England to achieve the gold award from the Soil Association, which involved meeting criteria to ensure the food served at the nursery is 100 per cent cooked from scratch and 100 per cent organic.
- Why did you decide to open the nursery just over two years ago?
As a mother of three children it is something I had also wanted to do. I'm so passionate about children and getting it right from the start. Running the nursery is hard work and a learning curve, but I love it.
