Stars of childcare enjoy a night out

The winners of this year's Childcare Stars Awards, organised by children's charity 4Children, were feted at a gala dinner last week at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. Children on a special panel helped to choose the Playworker of the Year, Hazel Keen, who runs Woodleys before-and after-school club in Aldbourne, Wiltshire. Five judges from Buccaneers Out of School Club in Cambridgeshire - ten-year-olds Rhiannon Campbell, Oscar Copping-Reed, Madeleine Thornton, Luke Bucklow, and Megan Ash, 11 - decided on the qualities that were important to them in a playworker. These were: be kind, fun, friendly, enthusiastic, calm in a crisis, able to manage difficult behaviour, and must like children.
