UCAS released a list last week of the 10 most common opening lines used in personal statements in its 2015 application cycle, with the line above featuring more than 1,700 times.
The exercise is intended to help students better convey their connection with their chosen subjects and to encourage greater originality. All of the top 10 most common lines could be said to be unoriginal.
“For a long as I can remember I have…” and “I am applying for this course because…” were the second and third most popular entries respectively.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – the famous quote by Nelson Mandela – was also chosen by nearly 150 students.
