Summer fun costs over 70 a week

in the UK are paying more than 70 a week for play schemes during the summer holidays, according to the annual holiday childcare costs survey published this week by the Daycare Trust. Figures are based on data provided by 204 Children's Information Services.

Costs for Scotland and Wales are being included for the first time.

The Trust said families could expect to pay an average of 76 a week per child, or 455 for a six-week place in a holiday play scheme.

The survey highlights the added problem that many play schemes do not run for the entire holiday period, causing disruption to many families.

Many areas in England have experienced a rise in costs since last year. The most striking increase was in the north-east, once one of the least expensive areas in the country for childcare, where fees have gone up by 19 per cent, with 82.20 the weekly cost for a play scheme.
