Sure Start smokers quit with parents' help

Staff at a Sure Start Children's Centre in Hampshire who smoke have been motivated to quit after parents invited them to attend a weekly smoking cessation group.

The smoking cessation group was originally set up at Sure Start Rowner in Gosport, Hampshire, eight years ago by local parents who wanted friendly and professional support to help them stop smoking.

In January they took this a step further and invited staff who smoke to a coffee morning to encourage them to give up or reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke and attend the centre's smoking cessation group.

Five out of the 17 members of staff who smoke attended the coffee morning.

As a result of the group, two members of staff say they have quit smoking and another has reduced the number of cigarettes she smokes.

The Try To Go Smoke Free group is run by smoking cessation adviser Sue Elliott, who works for Hampshire Primary Care Trust. It is open to both parents and staff.

The two-hour weekly drop-in sessions teach members about the effect smoking has on health and the dangers that third-hand smoke poses to children.

Ms Elliott said, 'We support parents in whatever they want to do and how they want to do it.

'Rowner is recognised as a vulnerable and deprived area with hard-to-reach families, who have hesitations about doing anything new and are wary of contacting professionals who may criticise them and who they don't trust because of past bad experiences.'

Julie George, Outreach Play and Learning Scheme Worker at Sure Start Rowner, gave up smoking four months ago after attending the group.

She said, 'The group is very relaxed and you are able to give up in your own time. Everyone is really supportive and it's a good way to meet new people'.

'I have tried to give up smoking in the past, as I wanted to set a good example for the children and I went to some local groups, but always felt that I was being criticised.'
