Sometimes children start a conversation in a direct way. Perhaps Siobhan bursts out with, 'It was so unfair in playgroup today!' It is obvious that she wants to tell you right now this minute what happened and why it was 'so unfair'.

Sometimes children start to confide worries without their emotions being transparent. Perhaps Andy starts with what sounds like a factual question - 'Is it true that...?'. But soon you realise that he has been frightened by a playground conversation about a nature programme on television. Andy needs reassurance that those giant hairy poisonous spiders do not live locally.
